Get your pet covered

A surprise vet bill is one of the biggest reasons families end up giving up a pet. Pet insurance can help. Here's how to choose a plan and get a quote in a few minutes.

How to get covered in 3 steps

1. Find your fit

Answer 6 quick questions below. We'll suggest 2–3 insurers whose verified features match what matters to you.

2. Get 2–3 quotes

Click Get a quote to go to each insurer's official quote page. Try a few deductible and reimbursement options to see how the price changes.

3. Enroll early

Coverage starts after a waiting period, and anything that shows up before then is usually treated as pre-existing. Sooner is better.

Pet insurance in plain English

Plan types

Accident-only covers injuries like a broken leg or a swallowed toy. It's usually the cheapest option. Accident & illness also covers sickness, from infections to cancer, and is what most people mean by pet insurance. Wellness plans or add-ons help pay for routine care like exams and vaccines. Some are insurance and some aren't.

Deductible

The amount you pay each year (or, with some insurers, per condition) before the plan starts paying. A higher deductible usually means a lower monthly premium.

Reimbursement %

The share of a covered bill the insurer pays after your deductible, often 70%, 80% or 90%. Most plans repay you after you pay the vet; a few can pay the vet directly.

Annual limit

The most the plan will pay in a policy year. Some insurers offer unlimited options.

Waiting periods

The time between enrolling and when coverage starts, often longer for illnesses or orthopedic problems than for accidents.

Pre-existing conditions

Problems that showed signs before coverage started or during the waiting period. They're generally not covered, though some insurers will cover curable conditions after a symptom-free period.

Pet health insurance vs. liability coverage

Pet health insurance pays for your pet's vet care. It doesn't cover damage or injuries your pet causes to other people or property. That's liability, which is often part of a renter's insurance policy. Some landlords ask renters with dogs to carry it, and some policies limit or exclude certain breeds, so check yours. Add liability coverage to your pet résumé if you have it.

Assistance animals (service animals and emotional support animals) aren't pets under the Fair Housing Act, so pet fees and pet rent generally don't apply to them. Pet health insurance is still worth considering for them. See our assistance animals guide.
