Renting with a pet in Queens

Queens offers a wide mix for pet owners: prewar and garden apartment buildings, a large number of co-ops, and attached or detached houses where a basement, upper-floor or whole-house rental may come with some yard space. Because so many Queens apartments are in co-ops, check early whether the building has its own pet rules and whether a board needs to approve your pet.

If a house rental includes yard access, confirm whether it's fenced, whether it's shared with the owner or other tenants, and what cleanup is expected. In apartment buildings, ask about elevators, laundry-room and lobby rules for dogs, and how far the nearest park or dog run is. Commuters should also think about midday walks and whether a dog walker can get building access.

New York City's pet law (NYC Administrative Code § 27-2009.1) applies in Queens like the other boroughs: in buildings with three or more units, a no-pet clause can be waived if a pet is kept openly for three months with the landlord's knowledge and no legal action, with exceptions including NYCHA. See the NYC Office of Animal Welfare. For lower-cost care, the ASPCA runs a community veterinary clinic in Long Island City and Animal Care Centers of NYC has held free vaccine clinics in Queens.

Dog licenses come from the NYC Health Department, and licensed, rabies-vaccinated dogs can use park dog runs off-leash. For a co-op board application, a pet résumé with vaccinations, spay/neuter status, training notes and a landlord reference keeps everything in one place. Make a free pet résumé.
